SSRI Birth Defects
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, are a class of antidepressant drugs garnering much controversy today due to their link to severe birth defects. Used by women during pregnancy, SSRIs demonstrate a very strong connection between life-threatening newborn injuries when used during the first trimester. According to a May 2005 Journal of the American Medical Association study, more than 80,000 pregnant women are prescribed SSRIs each year. The fact that this practice is still accepted is one thing we would like to change through our litigation work.
Much research about SSRI birth defects is still in progress, but recent favorable verdicts and settlements against the manufacturers of SSRIs are encouraging more women to step forward. If you took SSRIs during pregnancy and your child is suffering, you may have a valid claim. Feel free to call (855) 646-4355 or e-mail our office and Attorney Jerry Taylor will sit down and discuss our SSRI birth defect experience and how it can help your case.
How SSRI Drugs Work
SSRI drugs like Prozac, Zoloft®, and Paxil are intended to relieve some symptoms of depression by improving serotonin levels in the brain. The serotonin boosts ideally help regulate a patient’s mood, encourage a more emotionally balanced existence, and reduce the overall effects of depression. In addition to depression, SSRIs are commonly prescribed for bulimia, PMDD, OCD, and anxiety. Sometimes women begin a course of SSRI treatment for pregnancy-related symptoms and other times they are continuing a prior course of treatment, but in all cases the manufacturer had a responsibility to warn you of the risks associated with SSRI use during pregnancy.
Why SSRIs Can Be Dangerous
SSRIs are considered highly dangerous drugs when used during pregnancy. SSRI use has been shown to cause severe heart and lung defects, craniofacial malformations, limb defects, and other health issues, including the following:
- Clubfoot
- Craniosynostosis
- Tetralogy of fallot
- Tricuspic atresia
- Persistent pulmonary hypertension (PPHN)
- Atrial septal defect
- Double outlet right ventricle
- Abdominal wall malformations (omphalocele)
- Double inlet left ventricle
- Double aortic arch
