The largest drugmaker in the world, Pfizer, says it has settled almost half of the lawsuits against it over Prempro, a menopause drug.  The claim of most of these lawsuits is that the drug caused breast cancer.

A study in 2002 indicated that Prempro had a link to cancer.  By then, more than 6 million women had taken the drug.  Prempro is still on the market.  Pfizer has faced more than 10,000 claims that the drug caused cancer.  These claims included more than 8,000 cases consolidated in Arkansas Federal Court, as well as cases in Pennsylvania, Nevada and Minnesota.

Since 2006, 10 of the 18 cases that have gone to trial have been decided in favor of the plaintiff.  This month, a jury in Philadelphia ordered Pfizer to pay three women, who claimed that Prempro caused their breast cancer, $72.6 million in compensatory damages.
