The lives of thousands of people changed significantly after an explosion in the Gulf of Mexico on April 20, 2010.  That was the day the Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded and subsequently sank, which caused the largest accidental oil spill in history.  To those of us who live on the Gulf Coast it began several months of gloom as more than 150 million gallons of oil leaked into the Gulf of Mexico.  Thousands of people’s lives and livelihoods were damaged, and for some the problems continue to this day.  BP set aside a $20 billion compensation fund to pay those damaged by the spill.
