Merck withdrew Vioxx from the market in 2004.  Today it was reported that Merck has agreed to pay $950 million to settle criminal and civil charges relating to the promotion and marketing of the drug.

If you recall, Vioxx was linked to heart attacks and strokes.  Merck had previously reached a $4.85 billion settlement with people who took the drug in the United States.

Merck is also entering into a civil settlement to pay $628.4 million on account of off-label marketing and having made false statements about the cardiovascular safety of the drug.  $426.4 million will be paid to the federal government, and the rest will go to state Medicaid programs.
