How Levaquin® Works
Levaquin® and its generic brand levofloxacin are antibiotics that fall in the drug class called fluoroquinolone. Levaquin® is commonly prescribed to combat infections, including lung infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, sinus infections, and skin infections. Makers claim they are the most potent germ-killing antibiotics on the market today, highly effective at halting the production of proteins that help bad bacteria thrive.
Why Levaquin® Can Be Dangerous
Many researchers and medical professionals feel that this drug is actually toxic to tendon fibers, resulting in low blood supply and increased risk of tendon rupture. Levaquin® patients have recently come forward with serious health problems including tendon ruptures, tendonitis, rotator cuff injuries, bicep damage, hand injuries, and other muscle and tendon problems. The severity of damage varies by patient, but in serious cases a victim may lose full use of the affected area and could require surgical repair.
Levaquin has also been linked to irreversible peripheral neuropathy. This condition, which happens as a result of nerve damage, can cause numbness and pain in your hands and feet. This pain is often associated with burning, tingling, stinging and weakness.
Levaquin® and Tendonitis
Despite the mandatory “black box” safety warning added to packaging of Levaquin® in July of 2008, doctors still prescribe Levaquin® in record numbers, perhaps because drug representatives play down the risk and emphasize benefits. One severe side effect of using this drug is tendonitis, an inflammation of the fibrous, soft tissue cord that attaches the muscle tissue to bone. Symptoms of tendonitis include tendon swelling and pain, tenderness, redness, loss of movement, and bruising. Most commonly affected areas include the shoulder, elbow, thumb, wrist, and ankle. Major cases of tendonitis can be very limiting, especially in athletes and people with physically demanding careers. Victims of Levaquin® tendonitis may need surgery regain use of their limb.
