Composix Kugel Mesh Patch
The Composix Kugel Mesh patch is implanted through a small incision in the abdomen to repair abdominal hernias. During surgery the patch is folded and inserted. When it is in the abdomen it is designed to spring open and prevent hernias from pushing through weakened tissue walls. A problem has been found with the recoil ring in the patch and it has resulted in ring breakage in many patients. Various lots of the patches have been recalled by the FDA and the FDA has indicated that those products are dangerous and defective, and could cause serious health problems or death.
If the patch fails from buckling or breaking when in the abdomen it can puncture the intestines, migrate through the abdomina wall, cause abscesses, peritonitis, obstruction of the bowel and serious blood infections. These problems may manifest themselves through symptoms of fever, pain in the abdomen, diarrhea and nausea.
