House Democrats from the House Energy and Commerce Committee sent a letter to the Republicans who control the Committee urging them to hold hearings on the safety of transvaginal meshes.  Bloomberg reports that U.S. Representative Henry Waxman and three other representatives sent the letter asking for a hearing and demanding documents from manufacturers.  Earlier this month, the FDA ordered Johnson & Johnson and other manufacturers of transvaginal mesh to conduct safety studies after receiving reports of internal injuries associated with use of the vaginal implants.

This request comes as the Committee is considering overhauling FDA rules for approving medical devices.  On February 15 a hearing will take place to examine these rules, which will include testimony of various witnesses.  Debbee Keller, a spokeswoman for the Republican majority of the committee, stated in the Bloomberg report that "Members on both sides of the aisle agree the status quo is unacceptable."
