Stevens-Johnson Syndrome/Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Treatment

These conditions are very serious, potentially deadly, and must be treated immediately.  SJS can begin with common symptoms such as aching, headaches, fever and vomiting.  These symptoms are often followed by a rash, which may spread to various parts of the body.  If SJS continues to worsen, it often results in blisters on the body and inside the mouth and nose.  Mucous membranes can become inflamed.  SJS can become TENS, where the blistering is so severe that the skin comes off in sheets.  This leaves a high potential for infection.

The first step in any course of treatment is identification of these deadly conditions.  It is not uncommon for doctors to misdiagnose SJS because they are unfamiliar with it.  If the conditions are drug related, the drug must be discontinued immediately.  Unfortunately, no treatment can stop an SJS reaction once it has started.  In severe cases, it may be necessary to treat the patient in a burn unit.  Preventing further infection is paramount.  Intravenous fluid replacement may be required.
