Byetta

Byetta Has Been Reported to Cause Acute Pancreatitis and Renal Failure

Byetta is an injectible drug used to treat diabetes.  It is made by Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc. and marketed by Eli Lilly & Co.  Byetta was approved for use in the United States in 2005.  More than 700,000 people all over the world have now used this drug.

In August of 2008, the FDA issued a report to healthcare professionals indicating that they had received 6 cases of hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis in patients taking the drug.  In October of 2007, an FDA alert was issued because they had reviewed 30 postmarketing reports of acute pancreatitis in patients.  It was suspected that Byetta was the cause in some of the cases.  In November of 2009, the FDA announced a link to dozens of cases of altered kidney function and renal failure.

If you are using Byetta please contact your doctor before discontinuing use.  You should also be aware of the following symptoms of acute pancreatitis or kidney problems:

Abdominal pain
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Nausea
Fever associated with any other symptom
