Chantix® Side Effects Lawsuits
Chantix® has been marketed as a life-saving drug, but it has been linked to so many deaths and possibly fatal side effects that the lead researcher on a recent safety study said, "The sum of all the serious adverse effects of Chantix® clearly outweigh the most positive effect of the drug" and recommended that the FDA withdraw it from the market. Unfortunately, this has not yet happened and the drug continues to threaten the lives of people who hope it will help them quit smoking. If you or a loved one took Chantix® with tragic consequences, you may be eligible to receive compensation for your injuries.
The dangerous side effects of Chantix® are numerous. Though this page contains some basic information about the more common side effects, our experience with Chantix® victims leads us to believe there may even be more undiscovered dangerous side effects. We invite you to call us at (855) 646-4355 or email The Taylor Law Firm, LLC today for a free consultation on a Chantix® side effects lawsuit.
Chantix® Side Effects
Chantix®, manufactured by Pfizer, has been described as "one of the most harmful prescription drugs on the US market" by FDA safety researchers. The dangerous drug won approval in 2006 under the agency's priority-review program because of concerns about the dangers of smoking, but now many believe its dangers outweigh its benefits and that the drug should be pulled from the market. The dangerous side effects of Chantix® include:
- Heart attack
- Stroke
- Suicidal thoughts or actions
- Depression, anxiety, or panic attacks
- Violence
- Paranoia
- Hallucinations
- Blackouts, dizziness, or loss of concentration
- Stevens' Johnson Syndrome
These side effects account for thousands of tragic events, and in 2010 it ranked first in reported deaths, having twice as many logged fatalities as any other drug. These figures have swelled recently when the FDA discovered about 150 suicide reports, some dating back to 2006, that were inappropriately reported with 26,000 minor side effect reports.
Chantix® and Cardiovascular Events
One of the main reasons people want to quit smoking is because it is bad for the heart and circulatory system, but it seems Chantix® may be worse. According to a recent clinical trial, Chantix® was associated with a 72% increase in the risk of heart attack and stroke among people taking the medication. Although in the trial population of 700 patients there were no deaths during the 52-week study period, the results confirm those of a meta-analysis published in July 2011.
Chantix®, Suicide, and Violence
Among the best-known dangers of Chantix® is the increased risk of violence to self and others. There have been nearly 300 reports of suicide associated with Chantix® and hundreds more reports of aggression and violence against others. The exact numbers are unclear because some acts of violence go unreported. It has been even more difficult to understand this risk because Pfizer inappropriately reported more than half of the instances of suicide, practically concealing events that date back as far as 2006. By failing to appropriately report these risks, Pfizer has caused regulators and users to underestimate the dangers, putting thousands of people at risk.
