Accutane®

Accutane® is a popular anti-acne drug that has been prescribed throughout the United States since 1982. People who took Accutane® for control of acne have often ended up suffering from serious digestive tract injuries such as inflammatory bowel disease in the form of Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis. Alabama drug lawyer, Jerry Taylor knows there were signs of this potential side effect during the drug’s earliest trials. He is currently handling several Accutane® cases and insists that now is the time to make the manufacturer Hoffman-La Roche give back to innocent consumers harmed by their product.

How Accutane® Works

Accutane® is made from a Vitamin-A derivative called isotretinoin. This ingredient has been traditionally used to kill dividing cancer cells during chemotherapy treatment. This active ingredient helps fight acne by reducing the amount of oil produced by oil glands, thus preventing clogged pores and reducing chances of a breakout.

The drug was discontinued in June of 2009 due in large part to the rising number of lawsuits and has been under consistent scrutiny as a result of past users coming forward with evidence of negative health effects. The manufacturer of Accutane® has raked in billions of dollars in drug sales at the expense of consumers’ health.

Why Accutane® Can Be Dangerous

Accutane® is considered a dangerous drug because of its link to many different health problems, including such as Crohn’s Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease. When news of these dangerous side effects came out, manufacturer Hoffman-Roche did not want to admit they were connected with Accutane®. They wrote warnings to say that the conditions were “temporally associated” with Accutane® use, which their representatives explained meant the conditions happened during Accutane® use, but they did not inform doctors that evidence showed IBD could appear years after Accutane® use and could be permanent.

During the typical course of treatment (4 – 5 months), many patients were actually causing more harm than good by ingesting these pills, but may not know it until years later.  Accutane®’s list of serious side effects is long and users may experience any of the following:

  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Bowel pain
  • Birth defects
  • Depression
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Persistent heartburn
  • Stomach or chest cramping
  • Dark urine
  • Yellowing of the skin or eyes
  • Depression
  • Mood disturbances
  • Osteoporosis

Accutane® and Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Dangerous drug attorney, Jerry Taylor has represented many Accutane® victims with Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD). This condition includes swelling and inflammation in the intestines, causing serious effects like abdominal pain, rectal bleeding, anemia, and weight loss. IBD can lead to colon cancer if proper treatment is not sought.

Accutane® and Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is a form of inflammatory bowel disease that attacks the colon. It is the form of IBD that is most strongly connected with Accutane®. One recent study linked Accutane® use with a fourfold increased risk of ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis forces people to change their diets and may require the removal of your colon.

Accutane® and Crohn’s Disease

Accutane® has been linked to Crohn’s Disease, one of the most common types of inflammatory bowel disease. Crohn’s Disease sufferers frequently experience abdominal cramping because of an abnormal immune response in the body that leads white blood cells to infiltrate the intestinal lining. Any part of the gastrointestinal tract may be affected, causing a wide range of disruptive symptoms and requiring special dietary restrictions.
